Starting school — whether playgroup or kindergarten — is one of the biggest transitions in a young child’s life. A little thoughtful preparation at home can make an enormous difference to how smoothly and confidently your child makes the transition. At Mulberry House International Kindergarten, we share these practical, evidence-based strategies with every incoming family.

Positive Framing and Familiarization

Talk about school positively and specifically. Children pick up anxiety from adults, so the way you talk about school at home sets the emotional tone. Rather than “Don’t worry, school will be fine,” try specific positive framing: “Your school has a beautiful garden where you can dig and plant things. Your teacher loves stories, just like you do.” Concrete details help children form a positive mental picture of what to expect.

Visit the school before the first day if possible. Mulberry House offers settling-in sessions and open days specifically for this reason. Familiarity reduces anxiety — a child who has already been to the classroom, seen the toilets, and met their teacher is neurologically more prepared for the first official day.

Building Practical Skills and Goodbye Routines

Practice the practical skills that build independence. Can your child put on and take off their own shoes? Manage their own water bottle? Use the toilet independently? These small acts of self-care make an enormous difference to how confident and capable a child feels in a school environment. Practice at home in a low-pressure, playful way.

Build a goodbye routine now. Choose a special goodbye phrase or action — “three kisses and a wave” — and practice it at home with transitions to other caregivers like grandparents or babysitters. When it is used at school, it will already be familiar and comforting.

Shared Stories and Parental Confidence

Read books about starting school. There are wonderful picture books in both English and Mandarin that explore the experience of starting school, feeling nervous, and making friends. Reading these together opens up conversations and normalises the range of feelings your child might have.

Most importantly, trust your own calm. Children are extraordinarily perceptive. When you feel genuinely confident about their school, they absorb that confidence. Your trust in Mulberry House is one of the most powerful gifts you can give your child at the start of this adventure.
