Drop-off tears are one of the most heart-wrenching experiences for any parent, and they are also one of the most common things we see at Mulberry House International Kindergarten, particularly in the early weeks of term. If your child cries when you leave, please know: this does not mean your child is unhappy at school, that you have made the wrong choice, or that something is wrong. It is a completely normal part of early childhood development.

Understanding Drop-Off Tears: The Science of Attachment

What you are witnessing is attachment behaviour. Crying at separation is a sign that your child has formed a strong, healthy bond with you — which is exactly what you want. Securely attached children often protest most loudly at separation, precisely because they trust that the relationship is worth protecting. Over time, with the right support, these children develop the confidence to know that you will come back.

Expert Strategies for a Smoother Morning Drop-Off

Here are the strategies our teachers recommend most highly. Keep your goodbye short, warm, and consistent. Prolonged, anxious farewells actually extend distress rather than reducing it. A big warm hug, a confident “I love you, I’ll see you at pick-up time,” and a clear, swift handover to the teacher is the most effective goodbye. Your confidence is genuinely contagious — children take their emotional cues from you.

Create a goodbye ritual. It can be as simple as three kisses and a wave at the door, or a special handshake. Rituals are predictable and comforting — they tell your child exactly what will happen and create a clear endpoint to the separation moment.

Avoid sneaking away. While it may feel kinder in the moment, disappearing without saying goodbye increases anxiety in the long run, because your child learns that you might vanish at any moment.
